SOP 7:  VEHICULAR FIRES

 

 

A. The FIRST DUE ENGINE (MINIPUMPER R-1) to arrive on the fire scene has the following responsibilities:

1. Locate up-wind, up-hill, and not closer than 75 feet to the involved vehicle. Angle pumper across lane to block traffic and with pump panel angled toward the scene to protect pump operator and other firefighters. Turn off headlights and direct flood lights to avoid blinding on-coming motorists.

2. Size-up: Assess the situation and determine whether a HAZ-MAT condition exists. Assess the situation for trapped or incapacitated persons within the vehicle. Advise responding companies of conditions and locate incoming apparatus to best advantage. Request additional Ambulances and Rescue Companies from COUNTY COMMUNICATIONS.

3. Specific Tasks:

a. Advance first (left-side) 1½-inch preconnect attack line, equipped with and using SCBA, to involved area. Use of AFFF (foam) is recommended. Protect any trapped or incapacitated persons from fire and provide ventilation.

b. Advance second 1½-inch preconnect attack line, equipped with and using SCBA, to the fuel-tank area for deluge cooling.

 

B. The SECOND DUE ENGINE (MAXIPUMPER R-2 or R-3) to arrive on the fire scene shall have the following responsibilities:

1. Stage at the nearest hydrant and prepare to lay-in a 5-inch supply line to the scene.

2. Lay-In the primary: 5-inch supply line from the nearest hydrant; position by R-1 (unless ordered otherwise). Angle pumper across lane to block traffic and protect the pump operator and other firefighters. Turn off headlights and direct flood lights to avoid blinding on-coming motorists.

3. Specific Engine Company Tasks:

a. Supply water to R-1 by a 3-inch line.

b. Advance 2-inch attack line(s) as needed, equipped with and using SCBA.

c. Commence search operation, equipped with SCBA.

d. Lay a blanket of protective foam if large volumes of flammable liquids are involved or at risk.

e. Protect exposures, as necessary.

f. Contain any fuel spill,

 

C. The THIRD DUE ENGINE (MAXIPUMPER R-2 or R-3) to assist with extrication or stand by until needed.
