SOP 6. STRUCTURE FIRES: COMMERCIAL,
           SPRINKLERED STRUCTURES

 

 

A. The FIRST DUE ENGINE (MINIPUMPER R-1) to arrive on the fire scene has the following responsibilities:

1. Locate:  just past the front of the building at Exposure 1. Function as COMMAND POST.

2. Size-up: Assess the situation; advise responding companies of conditions and locate incoming apparatus to best advantage.

3. Specific Tasks:

a. Initiate the Incident Command System

b. Investigate cause for alarm and locate fire or other problem.

c. Advance initial 1½-inch hose-line, equipped with SCBA and portable radio.

d. Commence primary (hose-line) search-and-rescue.

e. Confine, and if possible, extinguish fire or mitigate problem.

f. When other units arrive on-scene, function as COMMAND POST.

 

B. The SECOND DUE ENGINE (MAXIPUMPER R-2 or R-3) to arrive on the fire scene shall function as an "ENGINE COMPANY" and have the following responsibilities:

1. Stage  at the nearest hydrant until ordered to the scene.

2. Lay-In and connect the primary 5-inch supply line from the nearest hydrant; position at EXPOSURE 1 (unless ordered otherwise), leaving access and operating room for an aerial unit.

3. Specific Engine Company Tasks:

a. Supply water to R-1 by a 3-inch line, if R-1 is pumping attack lines.

b. Advance tandem attack lines, equipped with and using SCBA.

(1) Stretch a 3-inch supply line with a gated wye or a 5-inch line with a manifold to the designated access and connect two 2-inch attack lines to the gated wye.

(2) Advance tandem 2-inch attack and back-up lines from the gated wye, equipped with SCBA.

c. Be prepared to connect to sprinkler connection if third-due pumper is delayed.

d. Commence primary search operation (with hose-lines), equipped with SCBA.

e. Undertake "truck company" tasks (forced entry, laddering, ventilation) as necessary.

 

C. The THIRD DUE ENGINE (MAXIPUMPER R-3 or R-2) to arrive on the fire scene shall function as a "LADDER COMPANY" and have the following responsibilities:

1. Stage at a different hydrant  from the second-due engine, until ordered to the scene.

2. Lay-In and sprinkler connection.  Lay-in the second 5-inch supply line from the second nearest hydrant; position near the sprinkler connection, leaving access and operating room  for an aerial unit. Connect two 3-inch lines to the sprinkler connection. Supply no more than water-main pressure (120 psi) to the sprinkler system.

3. Specific Truck Company Tasks:

a. Ladder structure on two sides.

b. Assist ventilation as required and coordinated with attack hose team(s).

c. Commence secondary search-and-rescue operation, equipped with SCBA.

d. Open ceilings and concealed spaces, as needed.

e. Commence salvage operations to protect property.

f.  Undertake "engine company" tasks as directed.

(1) Stretch a 3-inch supply line with a gated wye or a 5-inch line with a manifold to the designated access and connect two 2‑inch attack lines to the gated wye.

(2) Advance tandem 2-inch attack and back-up lines from the gated wye, equipped with SCBA.

g. Protect exposures, if necessary.
