SOP 4: STRUCTURE FIRES: RESIDENTIAL

 

 

A. The FIRST DUE ENGINE (MINIPUMPER R-1) to arrive on the fire scene has the following responsibilities:

1. Lay-In: If access to the structure is limited, drop a 3-inch supply line from a convenient location (such as the beginning of the driveway) for maxipumper hook-up. Locate in a position of relative safety with adequate visibility of the scene.

2. Size-up: Assess the situation; initiate the Incident Command System, advise responding companies of conditions and locate incoming apparatus to best advantage.

3. Specific Tasks:

a. Investigate cause for alarm and locate fire or other problem.

b. Advance initial 1½-inch hose-line, equipped with SCBA and portable radio.

c. Conduct primary (hose-line) search-and-rescue.

d. Confine, and if possible, extinguish fire or mitigate problem.

e. When other units are on-scene, function as COMMAND POST.

 

B. The SECOND DUE ENGINE (MAXIPUMPER R-2 or R-3) to arrive on the fire scene shall function as an "ENGINE COMPANY" and have the following responsibilities:

1. Stage at the nearest hydrant until ordered to the scene.

2. Lay-In the primary: 5-inch supply line from the nearest hydrant; position at EXPOSURE 1 (unless ordered otherwise) leaving room and access for aerial unit.

3. Specific Engine Company Tasks:

a. Supply water to R-1 by a 3-inch line.

b. Advance 2-inch attack line(s) as needed, equipped with and using SCBA.

c. Commence primary search operation with hose lines, equipped with and using SCBA.

d. Undertake "truck company" tasks (forced entry, laddering, ventilation) as necessary, equipped with and using SCBA.

4. Special circumstances: At 4 Piermont Road, the SECOND DUE engine shall not stage at the nearest hydrant, but instead proceed half way up the driveway and prepare to lay 5-inch supply hose from that drop.

 

C. The THIRD DUE ENGINE (MAXIPUMPER R-2 or R-3) to respond to the fire scene shall function as a "LADDER COMPANY" and have the following responsibilities:

1. Respond directly to the scene and commence "ladder company" operations unless required to hydrant assist for a long or steep primary hose lay. If pumping at the hydrant, send excess manpower to the scene with SCBA and hand-tools.

2. On scene, position as directed, leaving access and operating room for an aerial unit.

3. Specific Ladder Company Tasks:

a. Ladder structure on two sides, using ladders from both MAXIPUMPERS.

b. Commence secondary search operations once incident is under control, equipped with and using SCBA.

c. Assist ventilation as required and coordinated with attack hose team(s).

d. Commence secondary search-and-rescue operations,
e. Open ceilings and concealed spaces, as needed, equipped with and using SCBA

f. Commence salvage operations to protect property.

g. Undertake "engine company" tasks (back-up line or second attack hose lines), as directed, taking water supply from the second due engine.

h. Protect exposures, if necessary.

4. Special circumstances

a. 4 Piermont Road: The THIRD DUE engine shall stage at the nearest hydrant on Piermont Road, attach a HYDRANT-ASSIST VALVE, and prepare to lay 5-inch supply hose half way up the driveway and connect with the 5-inch dropped by the second due apparatus. Proceed to the scene and position as directed and commence Ladder Company tasks (as listed in 3 above).

b. Upper Rockleigh Road: The THIRD DUE engine shall stage at the hydrant by the Firehouse at the corner of Willor and Rockleigh, attach a HYDRANT-ASSIST VALVE, and prepare to lay 5-inch supply hose up Rockleigh Road to supply other apparatus. Proceed to the scene and position as directed and commence Ladder Company tasks (as listed in 3 above).
