A New Century

Over
250 years have passed since the Harings, Conklins, Rykers, and Snedens settled the area. Right into the last
decade of the 20th century their descendents continued to reside in Historic old homes along Rockleigh and Piermont Roads. Indeed,
Rockleigh Borough has grown at a slow and deliberate pace,
retaining "...a certain timelessness where past and present mingle." |

Renovations
to Borough Hall began in the late 1990's. Public Works was moved
from Borough Hall to a separate
site off Piermont Road with a new Colonial-style garage to house borough equipment
and the Borough Sewer Authority. Under the direction of Mayor
Roberta Adams and Councilman Ernie April, the spacious former DPW garage
attached to the original Borough Hall was reconstructed as the Council Chamber and dedicated
to the memory of long-time Mayor, Gordon Hutcheon. Renovation of the
Borough Clerk's Offices continued through 2000. During the next two years, the
original central portion of Borough Hall was renovated to provide, an
office for the mayor, new washroom facilities, and a new kitchen. An
added second floor provided file rooms for borough records as well as
office space and a sizable meeting room for the Rockleigh Volunteer Fire
Department and social functions. All of these facilities as well as
the council chamber and borough office are connected by a spacious
colonial central
hallway. While modernly functional, the interior finishing reflects
early Federal Period. The new Dutch roof of the original section is in
keeping with the historic nature of Rockleigh Borough. |

In
2004, Rockleigh Borough contracted with Northvale for Police Protection
and Security Support Services. While ending a thirty-year relationship with Bergen
County Police, the
Inter-Local Agreement between Rockleigh and Northvale for police services is an outstanding example of shared
community resources. |
